What is Strikethrough Text Generator?
Strikethrough Text Generator converts your regular text into s̶t̶r̶i̶k̶e̶t̶h̶r̶o̶u̶g̶h̶ styled text using Unicode combining characters. The result works in social media posts, messaging apps, and forums without needing any special formatting support.
Twelve styles ship by default: single bar, double bar, short stroke, slash through, bold + strike, tilde overlay, underline, overline, wavy underline, dotted underline, the Markdown wrapper ~~text~~, and a plain -word- wrap for chat clients that don't render Markdown. The Unicode-combining variants attach a tiny non-spacing mark to each character, so the result still copies and pastes as plain text and stays styled across Twitter, Discord, WhatsApp, Slack, and any forum that strips formatting.
How to use
- Step 1 — Type or paste your text into the input field.
- Step 2 — The strikethrough version appears instantly in the output area.
- Step 3 — Click 'Copy' to copy the strikethrough text and paste it anywhere you like.
When to use
- Crossing out an old price on a social-media post without uploading an image.
- Showing edits or retractions in a Discord or Telegram chat that has no Markdown.
- Marking finished items in a plain-text to-do list shared via copy-paste.
Result
You want to show a price change on social media: type 'Original price $50' to get 'O̶r̶i̶g̶i̶n̶a̶l̶ p̶r̶i̶c̶e̶ $̶5̶0̶' then follow it with 'Now $29.99'.
FAQ
- Why does the strikethrough sometimes show as boxes or look broken?
- Some older fonts skip the combining-character codepoints and render them as the tofu box. Default system fonts on iOS, Android, Windows 10+, and macOS handle them. If a recipient sees boxes, switch to the Markdown ~~text~~ style or the plain -word- wrap so the formatting survives.
- Will the strikethrough survive when I paste into another app?
- For the combining-character styles, yes. The strike is part of the underlying string, not a formatting layer, so any app that displays Unicode keeps it. For the ~~text~~ style, the receiving app needs to render Markdown for the line to actually appear struck.
- Can screen readers read this text out loud properly?
- Mostly yes — the combining marks are skipped and the underlying letters are read in order. Some screen readers may announce the combining character as a brief artifact between letters. For accessibility-sensitive contexts, use Markdown ~~text~~ which is announced as 'strikethrough' in most readers.
- Is the result one character per letter or two?
- Each visible character actually contains two Unicode codepoints: the letter and the combining strike mark. That means the string length doubles when you count codepoints, which matters for character-limited fields like the Twitter handle box or some SMS gateways.
- Does this work in formal contexts like job applications or legal documents?
- It's a poor fit. The combining marks may not render in PDFs, Word documents converted to print, or older email clients. For any document that will be printed or archived, use the formal strikethrough feature in your word processor instead of Unicode tricks.
