What is Webcam Recorder?
Webcam Recorder captures video directly from your webcam with optional audio from your microphone. Record quick video messages, tutorials, or selfie clips and download them as WebM or MP4. Everything stays on your device, so nothing is uploaded.
The recorder uses MediaRecorder under the hood, so video and audio are encoded privately on your device as they're captured. You can pick from any camera and microphone connected to your machine, mirror the preview if your webcam shows a flipped image, and set a 3 or 5 second countdown before recording starts. The elapsed timer keeps running while you record so you can stop on time.
How to use
- Allow camera and microphone access when prompted, then select your preferred devices.
- Click Record to start capturing. A timer shows elapsed time. Click Stop when finished.
- Preview the recording and click Download to save it to your device.
When to use
- Recording a video application or intro clip when you don't want to install Zoom or QuickTime.
- Capturing a quick screen-side talking head for a tutorial without opening editing software.
- Making a video reply to a friend's message when your phone is on the other side of the room.
Result
You need to record a 30-second video introduction for a job application. Select your laptop webcam, hit Record, speak your intro, stop, and download the MP4.
FAQ
- What video format does the download use?
- The recording saves as WebM with VP8 or VP9 video and Opus audio on most systems. On Safari (macOS and iOS) it saves as MP4 with H.264 and AAC instead. Both formats play in any modern player or video editor.
- Why is the preview mirrored but the saved file isn't?
- The preview is flipped so it feels like looking in a mirror, which is more natural when you're framing yourself. The actual recording captures the real, un-mirrored image so text behind you reads correctly when others watch it.
- Can I record without audio?
- Yes. Either deny microphone permission when prompted or select 'no microphone' from the device list. The video track will record on its own and the saved file will play silently.
- Is there a recording length limit?
- By default there's no hard cap, and the clip stays in your device's memory until you download it, so very long sessions can use several gigabytes of RAM. To stay safe you can set an auto-stop limit of 1, 5, or 15 minutes in the settings, and a countdown shows how much time is left. For anything past about 30 minutes a dedicated app is more reliable.
- Where do the recordings get stored?
- Nowhere automatic. Nothing is uploaded — the recording stays in memory on your own device until you click Download, at which point it saves to your normal Downloads folder. Closing or refreshing the tab discards the recording, so download before you leave the page.
