What is Word Search Generator?

Word Search Generator lets you create custom word search puzzles with your own words. Teachers use it for classroom activities, parents for educational games, and puzzle fans just for fun. Words are hidden in a grid horizontally, vertically, and diagonally.

Set grid size between 10x10 and 20x20 and toggle four direction modes: horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and reversed. Add up to 30 words separated by commas or newlines. The generator slots each word into a free run of cells, fills the gaps with random letters, and produces a printable layout with an optional answer key overlay.

How to use

  1. Enter your list of words separated by commas or new lines — the generator accepts up to 30 words per puzzle.
  2. Choose your grid size (10x10 to 20x20) and select which directions words can be placed: horizontal, vertical, diagonal, or reversed.
  3. Pick a difficulty preset or fine-tune size and directions yourself, click Generate, then download the puzzle as a printable PDF or PNG image — with an optional answer key.

When to use

  • Building a vocabulary worksheet for a Tuesday lesson on weather or seasons.
  • Putting together a kids' party activity sheet with names of guests or favourite movies.
  • Reinforcing ESL spelling: students see target words and physically scan for them.

Result

A 3rd-grade teacher enters 15 vocabulary words like 'OCEAN, MOUNTAIN, DESERT, FOREST' on a 15x15 grid. She generates both the puzzle and answer key, then prints 30 copies for her class.

FAQ

How many words can I fit before the puzzle fails to generate?
The cap is 30 words, but practical density depends on grid size and word length. A 15x15 grid comfortably fits 15-20 short words; pushing 30 long words usually needs at least an 18x18 or 20x20 grid plus diagonals enabled.
I got 'could not fit words' - what should I change?
Either shrink the word list, increase the grid size, or enable more direction options. The placer attempts each word in a random direction; with only horizontal allowed, long words quickly run out of room. Enabling diagonal usually unblocks the failure.
Is the printable layout actually print-friendly?
Yes. The print view drops all colour, uses monospace letters on a uniform grid, and fits a 20x20 puzzle plus word list on a single A4 or US Letter page. Hide the answer key for the student copy, show it for your own.
Does enabling reversed direction make the puzzle harder?
Significantly. Reading words back-to-front or upside down adds maybe 30-50% to solve time for most age groups. Use it for older children or as a difficulty toggle; for early readers stick to horizontal and vertical only.
Will the same word list always produce the same puzzle?
No. Both word placement and the random filler letters are reshuffled each generation. Hit Generate again to get a new layout with the same hidden words, which is useful when one student peeks at another's sheet.
