What is EPUB Reader?

EPUB Reader opens and displays .epub ebook files privately on your device. Navigate chapters, adjust font size and theme, and bookmark your reading position. No app installation needed.

Drop an .epub onto the page and it opens straight in the reader, never uploaded anywhere. Pagination, the table of contents, font scaling between 80 and 200 percent, light, sepia and dark themes all work without an account. Bookmarks and reading position save locally so you can close the tab and pick up later.

How to use

  1. Upload an .epub file from your device.
  2. Navigate using the table of contents or arrow keys to turn pages.
  3. Pick a reading font, set line spacing and margins, switch the theme, have the page read aloud, and bookmark your position.

When to use

  • Reading a Project Gutenberg classic without installing a separate desktop app.
  • Previewing a self-published .epub before sending it to Kindle or another reader.
  • Reading on a borrowed computer where you can't sign into your usual library app.

Result

Open a free Project Gutenberg EPUB, switch to dark theme for night reading, increase font size to 18px, navigate to chapter 5 from the table of contents, and bookmark your place.

FAQ

Does my book get uploaded to a server when I open it?
No. The .epub is parsed in memory and discarded when you close the tab. Nothing is sent over the network, which matters if the book is a draft or a private document.
Will my bookmarks and progress still be there next time?
Yes, as long as you open the same file in the same browser. Position and bookmarks save in local storage. Clearing site data or switching browsers wipes them, so back up important annotations.
Why don't .mobi, .azw3 or PDF files load?
The reader uses the EPUB format only. For Kindle .mobi or .azw3 files, convert to EPUB first with Calibre or a similar tool. PDFs use a fixed layout that doesn't reflow, so a different reader fits them better.
Can I read DRM-protected library or store ebooks here?
No. Books bought from Kindle, Kobo or Adobe-DRM library systems are encrypted and only their official apps can decrypt them. The reader handles unprotected EPUBs from Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, Smashwords and similar sources.
Where can I find free, legal EPUB books to read?
Project Gutenberg hosts over 70,000 public-domain titles. Standard Ebooks repackages classics with cleaner typography. Many academic publishers and authors also distribute free EPUBs directly from their sites.
