What is Historical Timeline?

Historical Timeline displays major world events on an interactive, scrollable timeline. Browse eras from ancient civilizations to the modern age, click events for details, and filter by category like wars, science, or culture.

The dataset spans from the unification of Egypt around 3100 BCE through the moon landing and the rise of the internet, drawing from four event categories: wars, science, politics, and culture. Filter to a single era or category, search by keyword, click any marker to read a short summary with the year, and export the filtered set as JSON or CSV for use in a school presentation or research project.

How to use

  1. Step 1 — Scroll or zoom along the timeline to navigate through different historical periods.
  2. Step 2 — Click on any event marker to read a summary with key dates and context.
  3. Step 3 — Filter events by category (wars, science, politics, culture) or search for a specific event or era.

When to use

  • Studying for a history exam and wanting context for an event sandwiched between two others.
  • Building a class lesson on the Scientific Revolution that runs Copernicus through Newton in order.
  • Researching a historical fiction setting and needing a quick read of what else happened that decade.

Result

A history student filters the timeline to 'Science' and explores the Scientific Revolution era (1543-1687), clicking through events from Copernicus's heliocentric model to Newton's Principia Mathematica.

FAQ

How many events does the timeline cover and where does the data come from?
The default dataset includes around a hundred turning points from antiquity to the present day, drawn from widely accepted historical milestones. It is meant as a starting reference, not a substitute for academic sources when you need a citable date.
Why are some early years shown as negative numbers?
Negative values mark years BCE (Before Common Era). The Unification of Egypt at -3100 means 3100 BCE. Year 1 CE is shown as 1, and the timeline scrolls continuously across the BCE/CE boundary so you can see how Roman events flow into the early medieval period.
Can I filter to only see events from one category?
Yes. The Filter dropdown switches between Wars, Science, Politics, and Culture. Combine it with the era selector (Ancient, Medieval, Modern, Contemporary) to narrow the view to, say, only scientific advances during the medieval period.
What does the JSON export look like and what is it useful for?
The JSON contains an array of event objects with id, year, title, description, category, era, and an optional wiki field linking to the Wikipedia article. You can pipe it into a custom timeline component on your own site, or import it into a flashcard app to study a specific era for an exam.
How accurate are the dates for ancient events?
Dates earlier than around 600 BCE are best-estimate from archaeology and inscriptions and can vary by a decade or more between sources. The timeline uses the most commonly cited year. For a paper that needs precision, cross-check with a published reference work.
