What is PDF Page Number Adder?
Upload a PDF and add page numbers where you want them. Pick a format (1,2,3 or i,ii,iii or A,B,C), set a starting page and number, and adjust font size and margins. Then download the numbered PDF.
Nine position slots cover the top, middle, and bottom rows at left, center, or right. Pick from arabic, roman, or alphabetic formats, optionally add prefix/suffix text like 'Page' or '/ 245', and choose font size and margin. The start and end pages let you number just a range, and the starting number lets you continue numbering from another document. The original PDF is never sent anywhere.
How to use
- Upload your PDF file — any size, any number of pages.
- Configure numbering: position (top/middle/bottom, left/center/right), format (arabic, roman, alphabetic), the page range, and font size.
- Preview the result and download your PDF with page numbers added.
When to use
- Numbering a thesis where front matter uses i, ii, iii and the body restarts at 1.
- Adding folio numbers to a printed book that already has 24 pages numbered.
- Stamping court bundle pagination on every page for cross-reference in arguments.
Result
Upload a 45-page thesis, set roman numerals (i, ii, iii) for the first 5 pages of front matter, then switch to arabic (1, 2, 3…) starting from page 6.
FAQ
- Will the page numbers overlap existing footers or text in the PDF?
- Possibly. The tool draws on top of the page, so if your PDF already has footer text at the same position you should choose a different corner or increase the margin. Use the preview before downloading to spot collisions.
- Can I skip the cover page and start numbering from page 2?
- Yes. Set 'Start From Page' to 2 and 'Start Number' to 1. Pages 1 stays clean, page 2 displays 1, page 3 displays 2, and so on. For a longer front matter section, set the start page to wherever the body begins.
- Does the tool work with encrypted PDFs?
- It opens PDFs with view-only encryption (no owner password), but truly password-protected files won't load. Unlock the file first, then add numbers. Encryption is preserved on save only when no permission change is needed.
- Why are my roman numerals tiny on landscape pages?
- Font size is measured in PDF points (1pt ≈ 1/72 inch), the same on portrait and landscape pages. A landscape page just has more space around the number. Bump the font size if the proportions feel off on wider pages.
- Will the file size grow much after adding numbers?
- Hardly. The text annotation is a few bytes per page, so a 200-page document grows by maybe 10–20 KB. Nothing is re-rasterised, so the original quality and selectable text remain intact.
