What is Torque Converter?

FAQ

What's the difference between N·m and lb·ft?
Both measure rotational force but use different base units. One pound-foot equals about 1.356 newton-metres, so a 100 lb·ft spec becomes roughly 135.6 N·m. The wrench you use determines which one matters for a given job.
Is kgf·m the same as kg·m?
Almost. Kgf·m means kilogram-force times metre, where one kilogram-force is the weight (gravity) of one kilogram of mass on Earth. So 1 kgf·m equals 9.80665 N·m. Plain kg·m is dimensionally incorrect for torque.
Why is dyne-centimetre such a tiny unit?
It comes from the CGS system used in physics. One dyne is the force needed to accelerate a one-gram mass by one centimetre per second squared. That gives a torque scale ten million times smaller than the SI newton-metre.
Do I need to worry about clockwise vs counter-clockwise torque?
The numbers are the same; sign just denotes direction. Most workshop specs assume tightening (clockwise for right-handed threads). Reverse-threaded fasteners on lawnmower blades and some pulleys flip that convention.
How do I convert torque numbers from older Japanese service manuals?
