FAQ
- Is kilogram-force the same thing as a kilogram?
- No. A kilogram is mass; kilogram-force (kgf) is the force that mass exerts under standard gravity (9.80665 m/s²). One kgf equals 9.80665 N. Mass stays constant on the Moon, but the kgf reading would drop sixfold.
- What's the difference between pound-force and pound-mass?
- Pound-force (lbf) is a force unit: the weight of one pound-mass at standard gravity. One lbf is 4.4482 N. Engineering specs that mix the two without subscripts cause the bulk of unit conversion mistakes.
- Why is a dyne so small compared to a Newton?
- Dyne is the CGS unit: it's the force needed to accelerate one gram by one centimetre per second squared. One Newton equals exactly 100,000 dyne, so dyne shows up in old physics papers and surface-tension measurements (dyne per centimetre).
- How precise are the conversions on this page?
- Internally we use the exact SI definitions (1 lbf = 4.4482216152605 N; 1 kgf = 9.80665 N). Results show six significant figures by default, and you can switch to 3 for a quick read or 8 for a tighter spec — more than any mechanical drawing tolerance requires.
- Does the tool handle negative or extremely large numbers?
- Yes. The math runs on regular JavaScript doubles, so anything up to about 1e308 works — well past the thrust of a Saturn V. Negative values flip sign across every unit, useful for tension/compression conventions in mechanics.
