What is Mental Math Practice?

Mental Math Practice challenges you with timed arithmetic problems to improve your calculation speed. Track your accuracy and response time across sessions — this free tool runs entirely on your device for distraction-free practice.

Three difficulty tiers control number range: Easy uses single digits, Medium two-digit numbers up to 99, and Hard three-digit numbers up to 999, or you can flip on a custom range to pin your own min and max for the +, − and × problems. Pick which operations to drill (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages and squares) and they mix randomly each round. Divisions always have whole-number answers, and percentages are chosen so the result is a round whole number too. Answer by typing or switch to multiple choice for a tap-friendly drill. Run a timed session (30, 60, 90, 120 or 300 seconds), a fixed question count (10, 20 or 50 problems), or Survival mode, where the clock shrinks after every correct answer and a single miss ends the round. The tool stores your last 10 sessions locally and counts your day streak so you can watch your progress grow.

How to use

  1. Select a difficulty level and operation type to begin
  2. Solve each problem as quickly as you can by typing the answer
  3. Review your speed, accuracy, and streak at the end of each round

When to use

  • Sharpening arithmetic before a job interview that includes a numerical reasoning test.
  • Daily warm-up for students who freeze on timed math sections.
  • Building back the speed you lost after years of relying on a calculator at work.

Result

Complete a 60-second round of addition problems, answering 23 + 47 = 70 in under 3 seconds, and finish with 92% accuracy across 15 problems.

FAQ

Why is multiplication so much harder than addition in Hard mode?
Multiplying two-digit numbers requires holding intermediate carries in memory while computing the next partial product. Addition keeps a single running total. The cognitive load is roughly three times higher, so expect lower accuracy.
Is there a trick for fast two-digit multiplication?
For 23 x 47, do (20 x 47) + (3 x 47) = 940 + 141 = 1,081. Breaking one operand into round numbers + remainder lets you avoid the full grid method. With practice this takes about 4 seconds.
Does the timer punish wrong answers?
In Timed and Question-count modes there is no extra time penalty — a wrong answer resets your streak counter and counts toward the accuracy percentage, while the correct value flashes briefly so you can learn from the miss. Survival mode is the exception: one wrong answer ends the run immediately. Speed comes from getting more correct problems, not from rushing past mistakes.
What counts as a good accuracy score?
On Medium with mixed operations, 85% accuracy at 4-5 seconds per problem is competent. Sub-3-second responses with 90%+ accuracy is mental-arithmetic-competition territory.
Is my session history sent anywhere?
No. The last 10 sessions are stored in your browser's local storage on your device only. Clearing browser data or using the Clear History button removes them. Nothing reaches a server.
