What is Photo Mosaic Generator?

Photo Mosaic Generator recreates a target image using a grid of smaller tile images. Upload a main photo and a set of tile images, and the tool arranges the tiles to approximate the original. Works well for personalized gifts, posters, and art projects.

Each cell of the grid is matched to the tile whose average RGB colour is closest to the cell's average colour. With color matching on, a thin tint is blended over each tile so it leans toward the target colour without losing the photo underneath. More tiles plus a denser grid yield a sharper portrait; fewer tiles look more abstract from up close.

How to use

  1. Upload your main target image — the photo you want to recreate as a mosaic.
  2. Upload a collection of tile images (at least 20–50 for best results) that will fill the grid.
  3. Adjust grid density and color matching, then download the finished mosaic as a PNG, a smaller JPG, or copy it to the clipboard.

When to use

  • Making a 50th-birthday wall print from a hundred snapshots of the honoured person.
  • Building a team photo where every employee's headshot fills a single cell.
  • Creating a wedding favour or a fundraiser poster from supporter selfies.

Result

A parent uploads a family portrait as the target and 100 vacation photos as tiles. The tool arranges the vacation snapshots into a grid that, when viewed from a distance, reveals the family portrait.

FAQ

How many tile images do I need?
Twenty tiles work for a 10x10 grid but the same tile repeats often. Around 100 tiles give a richer print, and 300+ make every cell feel unique up close. Tiles should cover a spread of brightness — mix dark, mid and bright photos so the mosaic can match every region.
Why does my mosaic look muddy or washed out?
Increase the color matching slider so the tint over each tile aligns more strongly with the target. Also boost grid density: small cells let the eye blur tiles into the original image. If tiles are all similar shades, mosaic colour fidelity is capped by what you provided.
Can I print the result as a poster?
Yes. Enable High Resolution before generating — the canvas renders at 4x density so a 5000-pixel-wide PNG prints cleanly at A2. The download menu offers PNG for lossless quality or JPG for a much smaller share-ready file.
Will the same tile appear too many times?
By default tiles repeat as needed to match the target's colours. Switch off Allow tile reuse and the tool spreads tiles evenly so the same photo never lands twice while you have spare ones. Spread your tile set across more shades to dilute the repetition either way.
What aspect ratio should tile images have?
Square tiles work best because each cell is square. Non-square photos get centre-cropped to fit, so faces or subjects near the edges might lose part of the frame. If you want tighter framing, crop tiles to 1:1 yourself first.
