What is Speed Converter?
The Speed Converter instantly converts between miles per hour, kilometers per hour, meters per second, knots, feet per second, Mach number, and the speed of light. Enter a value in any unit and see all conversions update in real time.
Conversions use the SI definition where 1 mph = 0.44704 m/s exactly, Mach is calibrated to the speed of sound at sea level and 20°C (343 m/s), and the speed of light is the exact value 299,792,458 m/s. A quick-reference panel shows everyday benchmarks: walking, cycling, highway driving, bullet train, and the speed of sound, so any input gives you immediate context.
How to use
- Enter a speed value in any of the supported unit fields.
- All other unit fields update instantly with the converted values.
- Copy any converted value, reset all fields, or download the full conversion table as CSV.
When to use
- Reading aviation speeds in knots and converting them back to km/h for road context.
- Translating a marathon pace given in m/s into a runner-friendly km/h figure.
- Checking what a marketing claim of Mach 2 means in plain everyday units.
Result
Convert a car's speed of 65 mph. The other fields show 104.6 km/h, 29.1 m/s, 56.5 knots, 95.3 ft/s, and Mach 0.085.
FAQ
- Is Mach a fixed conversion or does it depend on conditions?
- Mach is a ratio, not a fixed unit. This converter uses the speed of sound at sea level and 20°C (343 m/s, ~767 mph) as Mach 1. At higher altitudes or colder temperatures the local speed of sound is lower, so the same Mach number corresponds to a slower absolute speed.
- What's the difference between knots and mph?
- A knot is one nautical mile per hour, and a nautical mile (1.852 km) is longer than a statute mile (1.609 km). So 1 knot equals about 1.151 mph. Aviation and shipping use knots because nautical miles align with one minute of latitude.
- Why does my converted value have so many decimals?
- Conversions are stored with full precision internally and displayed to the number of decimals you pick (2, 4, 6, or 8) using the Decimals control. Very small or very large numbers may show in scientific notation or with trailing zeros trimmed. Use the CSV download if you need the values for further calculation.
- Can I convert from m/s to mph by hand?
- Multiply m/s by 2.237 for a close estimate, or by 3600/1609.344 = 2.23694 for higher precision. The reverse: multiply mph by 0.44704 to get m/s exactly.
- Does the converter handle negative speeds?
- No. Speed in physics is a magnitude, always non-negative. For velocity with direction, enter the absolute value here and track direction separately. Negative inputs are rejected and reset the field to empty.
