What is Volume Converter?
Volume Converter instantly converts between liters, gallons, milliliters, cups, fluid ounces, tablespoons, teaspoons, and more. Use it in the kitchen, in the lab, or any time you're moving between metric and imperial volume measurements.
Eleven units covering both systems: millilitres, litres, cubic metres, US fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, gallons, tablespoons, teaspoons, and cubic feet. Type in one field and every other field updates instantly. Each result has a copy button so you can paste exact numbers into a recipe app, lab notebook, or spreadsheet.
How to use
- Step 1 — Enter a numeric value in any volume unit field.
- Step 2 — All other unit fields update automatically with the converted values.
- Step 3 — Click the copy icon next to any result to copy it to your clipboard.
When to use
- Following an American recipe in a metric kitchen, or vice versa.
- Sizing aquarium water changes, hydroponic reservoirs, or fuel tanks where the supplier and the spec sheet use different units.
- Translating cubic feet of soil, mulch, or concrete to litres when shopping at metric-only suppliers.
Result
A recipe calls for 2 cups of milk but you only have a metric measuring jug. Enter '2' in the cups field and instantly see it equals 473.18 mL.
FAQ
- Why does 1 US cup equal 236.6 mL and not 250 mL?
- The US legal cup is 236.588 mL; the metric cup used across the UK and Australia is 250 mL. Flip the US / UK toggle to switch between them. Japanese cups (200 mL) aren't a preset, so for those read the millilitre column directly.
- Are these fluid ounces or weight ounces?
- Fluid ounces, which measure volume. Weight ounces (mass) are different — 1 fluid ounce of water happens to weigh about 1 ounce, but for oil, syrup, or flour the weight is different from the volume number.
- Can I convert dry ingredients with this?
- Yes — pick an ingredient (flour, sugar, butter, honey, milk, oil) and the tool adds a weight readout in grams and ounces using that ingredient's density. 1 cup of flour weighs far less than 1 cup of water, and the ingredient selector accounts for that.
- What is the difference between US gallons and imperial gallons?
- The US gallon is 3,785 mL and the imperial (UK) gallon is 4,546 mL — about 20% more. Set the US / UK toggle to UK and every imperial unit (gallon, quart, pint, fluid ounce, tablespoon, teaspoon) switches to British values automatically, no manual multiplying.
- How many decimal places does it keep?
- Internally the math is double-precision. The decimal-places selector lets you choose 2, 4, 6, or 8 places, so you can keep results clean for cooking or precise for science. The copy button gives you the displayed value.
