What is the difference between weight and mass?

In physics, mass measures matter (constant) and weight measures the force gravity exerts on that mass (changes with location). In daily life and on every commercial scale, the two are used interchangeably. This converter handles the common-usage values.

How does an imperial ton differ from a metric ton?

A metric ton (tonne) is 1,000 kg or about 2,205 lb. The imperial long ton is 2,240 lb, roughly 1,016 kg — about 1.6% heavier than a tonne. The US short ton is 2,000 lb (≈907 kg). This converter includes all three so North American and UK figures never get mixed up.

Why are some pound conversions off by a tiny fraction?

The international pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg. Rounded calculations and historical "avoirdupois" pounds can differ in the fifth decimal place. For commerce and cooking that gap is invisible, but it matters in metrology and customs.

Can I convert weight to volume here?

No. Going from kilograms to litres requires the density of the substance — water at 1 kg per litre is the easy case, but flour, oil, or sand each have their own values. Use a density-aware tool for that direction.

What are stones still used for?

Stones (1 st = 14 lb ≈ 6.35 kg) are everyday weight units in the UK and Ireland, mainly for body weight. "11 stone 4" rolls off the tongue easier than "159 pounds" or "72 kg". Doctors and gyms there use kilograms, but personal weight is still spoken in stones.
