What is D&D Character Generator?
D&D Character Generator creates randomized Dungeons & Dragons characters complete with a name, race, class, background, ability scores, skill proficiencies, hit points, Armor Class, speed, saving throws, alignment, a personality trait, ideal, bond, flaw, and a backstory hook. Perfect for new players who need a quick character or DMs spinning up a whole party of NPCs at once.
Choose a party size from one to four, then choose from nine races and twelve classes pulled from the 5e core. Roll ability scores three ways — 4d6 drop lowest, the official Standard Array of 15/14/13/12/10/8, or a balanced 27-point Point Buy — and the sheet applies each race's standard ability score increases on top of the rolls. Hit points come from the class hit die plus the Constitution modifier, Armor Class is 10 plus the Dexterity modifier, and the saving throw line adds the +2 proficiency bonus to the two saves the class is proficient in. A random Background (Acolyte, Criminal, Folk Hero, and more) grants two skill proficiencies, the class adds its own picks, and the sheet lists all eighteen 5e skills with proficient ones marked, bonuses calculated, and passive Perception worked out. Each character also gets a personality trait, ideal, bond, and flaw, a race-appropriate name, an alignment, and a backstory hook. Generate a single hero or a full four-person party in one click, lock the traits you like, and copy or download the whole sheet as text.
How to use
- Click Generate to create a fully randomized character, or lock specific traits (like race or class) before generating.
- Choose a party size (1 to 4), pick how to roll the ability scores — 4d6 drop lowest, Standard Array, or Point Buy — then review each generated sheet: race-appropriate name, background, hit points, Armor Class, speed, proficiency bonus, six ability scores with racial bonuses, saving throws, the full skill list with proficiencies and passive Perception, and a personality trait, ideal, bond, and flaw.
- Copy the character summary or download it as a text sheet to bring to your next session.
When to use
- Spinning up a quick NPC when the party wanders into an unplanned tavern.
- Giving a brand new player a starter character so they can join the next session.
- Breaking writer's block on a one-shot by letting the dice pick the protagonist.
Result
A DM quickly generates a Half-Elf Bard named Soveliss with 14 CHA, 12 DEX, 9 HP, a +2 proficiency bonus, and the backstory hook "Once performed for a king who vanished the next morning" for an improvised tavern NPC.
FAQ
- How are the ability scores rolled?
- Three methods, your choice. 4d6 drop lowest rolls four six-sided dice per ability and keeps the top three — the classic random method. Standard Array assigns 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 in a random order, which is the most common pick-up game distribution. Point Buy hands out a balanced 27-point spread that respects the official 5e cost table. Pick whichever your table uses before you generate.
- Can I lock a specific race or class and reroll everything else?
- Yes. Tap the lock icon next to any trait — name, race, class, background, alignment, ability scores, personality, or backstory — before pressing Generate. Locked traits stay put and only the unlocked ones reroll, which is handy when you've nailed half the concept. When you're generating a party, the locks pin the first character while the rest of the group rerolls freely.
- Does it apply racial ability score increases?
- Yes. The sheet now shows final scores with each race's standard 5e increases already baked in — a small orange tag marks every ability that got a bonus (Half-Elf, for example, gets +2 CHA and +1 to its two next-highest scores). Hit points, Armor Class, and saving throws all recalculate from those adjusted totals, so the character is ready to play as shown.
- Are the backstory hooks tied to a specific setting?
- No. They're written as portable beats. A line like "carries a locket with a portrait of someone they cannot remember" works in the Forgotten Realms, Eberron, your homebrew, or anywhere else.
- What's on the generated character sheet?
- Quite a lot now. Every sheet has a name, race, class, background, alignment, all six ability scores with racial bonuses applied, hit points at level 1, Armor Class, walking speed, the proficiency bonus, a saving throw line, the full 18-skill list with proficient skills marked and bonuses calculated, passive Perception, a personality trait, ideal, bond, and flaw, plus a backstory hook. Skill proficiencies come from both the class and the background, just like the real rules. Starting equipment and spell lists still aren't included — for those a full sheet builder like D&D Beyond is the better tool.
