What is Pattern Maker?

Pattern Maker lets you design seamless repeating patterns using shapes, lines, and colors. Adjust symmetry, rotation, spacing, and row offset to create tiles for backgrounds, textiles, or wrapping paper, then download as a PNG or scalable SVG.

The generator handles eight base shapes (circle, triangle, square, hexagon, star, diamond, plus, heart) plus custom PNG/SVG uploads. Symmetry modes include mirror X, mirror Y, mirror XY, diagonal mirror, and 4-fold rotation, while tiling arrangements (grid, zigzag, cross-weave, pyramid) restack the same motif into very different layouts, all kept seamless. Switch on a transparent background to export a PNG with alpha you can layer over anything, grab a ready-to-paste CSS snippet for web backgrounds, or download up to 4096×4096 as PNG, JPEG, or SVG for print. Save your settings to a small file and load it back any time to keep editing where you left off.

How to use

  1. Choose a base shape (circle, triangle, square, hexagon) and set the grid size and spacing for your tile.
  2. Adjust colors, rotation, scale, and symmetry options to create your desired repeating pattern.
  3. Preview the seamless tile, then download the pattern as a high-resolution PNG, a web-ready JPEG, or a scalable SVG vector file — or save your settings to a small file to reopen and edit later.

When to use

  • Building a tileable background for a website hero or app onboarding screen.
  • Designing wrapping paper, fabric prints, or notebook covers from a simple motif.
  • Generating placeholder texture for product mockups and presentation slides.

Result

A graphic designer creates a geometric hexagon pattern in navy and gold for a product packaging background, exported at 2048×2048 pixels.

FAQ

Are the patterns truly seamless when I tile them?
Yes. The tile preview shows one unit, and the full preview repeats it across a larger area so you can confirm the edges match. As long as you keep shapes inside the grid bounds, you'll get a clean repeat with no visible seams.
What's the difference between mirror symmetry and 4-fold rotation?
Mirror flips the motif across an axis, which gives kaleidoscope-like reflections. 4-fold rotation copies the motif four times around the centre at 90-degree intervals, useful for mandala-style or wallpaper patterns.
Can I upload my own shape instead of using the presets?
Yes. Pick Custom under base shape and upload a PNG or SVG. Use a transparent background so the shape blends with whatever fill colour you pick. Vector SVGs scale cleanest at large export sizes.
What export size should I use for print versus screen?
For screen backgrounds, 1024 or 2048 is plenty. For print at 300 DPI on letter-size paper you want at least 2550 pixels wide, so pick 4096 to be safe. Larger files take longer to render in the canvas.
Does increasing grid size make the pattern denser or sparser?
Denser. Grid size is the number of motifs per tile row, so 8 means an 8×8 grid of shapes inside the tile. Spacing controls the gap between them, so use a small spacing if you want shapes to nearly touch.
