What is Whiteboard?
Whiteboard is a free, private canvas for sketching, diagramming, and brainstorming. Pick the pen, drop in shapes, add typed labels, and arrange the lot with the move tool. Export as PNG or SVG, or save the whole project to a JSON file you can reopen later.
The toolbar gives you a pen, geometric shapes (rectangle, circle, triangle, diamond, line, arrow), text, sticky notes, an eraser, and a selection arrow that lets you move, resize, and delete items. You set stroke colour, fill, and line width before drawing, and any selected shape can be sent forward or back when objects overlap. The project exports as PNG, SVG, or JSON, and loading a saved JSON file restores every element exactly where you left off.
How to use
- Pick a drawing tool from the toolbar: pen for freehand; rectangle, circle, triangle, diamond, line, or arrow for shapes; text for labels; sticky note to drop a coloured note for ideas; or the selection arrow to move, resize, and reorder things you already drew.
- Drag on the canvas to draw. Each tool reads the current stroke colour, fill colour, and line width from the toolbar, so set those before you draw the next element.
- Export the board as PNG for screenshots, SVG for editing in Illustrator or Figma, or save the project as JSON so you can keep working on it later in another session.
When to use
- Sketching a wireframe or flowchart fast, without opening Figma or installing software.
- Walking a teammate through a system over a screenshare, drawing as you talk.
- Teaching a concept on a tablet, annotating shapes, then exporting the result for the class notes.
Result
You're outlining a checkout flow. Drop a rectangle for the cart page, type the label inside, draw an arrow to the next rectangle (payment), and another to a green-filled circle for the success screen. Export as SVG so your designer can paste it into Figma.
FAQ
- Can I save my work and come back to it later?
- Yes. Choose Save Project to download a JSON file containing every shape, line, and label on the canvas. Drop that JSON back in later and the board reopens exactly as it was. Nothing is stored on a server.
- What's the difference between exporting PNG, SVG, and JSON?
- PNG is a flat image, great for screenshots and chat. SVG keeps each shape editable, which is what you want if a designer needs to keep working on it. JSON is the project file, the only format that lets you reopen and edit later.
- Why does my hand-drawn line look jagged when I zoom in?
- PNG exports use the screen pixel grid, so heavy zoom shows the staircase effect. Export SVG instead and the strokes stay smooth at any size because they are stored as vector paths, not as pixels.
- Can I add an image to the whiteboard?
- Yes. Click the Add image button (or drop a PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, or SVG into the file picker) and the image lands centred on the canvas as a draggable, resizable object. The file stays on your device — nothing is uploaded.
- Is anything I draw uploaded to a server?
- No. Drawing, undo, and export all happen on a canvas element inside this page. Closing the tab clears the board from memory. The JSON file you optionally download is the only way work leaves your device.
